A kutatás
összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára - Summary for experts
Intenzív villámkisülések extrém alacsony frekvencia
tartományban (ELF, 3-3000 Hz) megfigyelhető, néhány tizedmásodpercnél
rövidebb időtartamú elektromágneses (EM) jel perturbációkat (tranzienseket)
is okoznak. A nagy töltésmomentumú villámoktól származó ELF tranziensek a
Föld minden pontján észlelhetők, mert csillapításuk csekély. Az ELF
tranziensek tulajdonságai tükrözik a forráskisülés árammomentum változását,
az észlelőhely környezetében a Föld-ionoszféra hullámvezető határfelületein
az EM hullámok terjedését módosító elektromos vezetőképességi viszonyokat,
valamint távoli villámok esetén a hullámvezető jelterjedésben érintett
részének A pályázott kutatómunka célja, hogy megvizsgálja a nagyszámú ELF tranziens elemzésén alapuló módszerek alkalmazhatóságát - a Föld-ionoszféra hullámvezető globális EM állapotának megfigyelésében - a földkéreg szerkezetének megismerésében - az extrém töltésmomentumú villámkisülések területi és időbeni előfordulási statisztikáinak meghatározásában és - különböző időskálájú (pl. villámok, illetve a naptevékenység okozta) EM perturbációk jellemzésében az atmoszféra-ionoszféra rendszerben. Ezeken a kutatási területeken az ismert módszerek alkalmazása mellett az ELF tranziensek felhasználásán alapuló újabb eljárások keresésére is vállalkozunk. |
Intense
lightning flashes also cause electromagnetic (EM) signal perturbations of
short (less than a few tenths of a second) duration (transients) in the
extremely low frequency range (ELF, 3-3000 Hz). ELF transients produced by
lightning discharges with large charge moment change (CMC) can be detected
worldwide because they suffer small attenuation. Properties of ELF transients
mirror the CMC of the parent electrical discharge, conductivities of the
Earth-ionosphere waveguide near the observation site, and EM characteristics
of the waveguide along the propagation path of the signal. These features
make ELF transients a useful tool in studying our EM environment
comprehensively. Published research, however, deals with only a subset of
possibilities for utilizing ELF transients in this aspect and only a few
studies report on systematic investigations of our EM environment based on
ELF transients. The aim
of the proposed research work is to examine the applicability of various
methods based on statistical analysis of properties of ELF transients in -
monitoring the global EM state of the Earth-ionosphere waveguide - exploring
the structure of the Earth’s crust -
determining the spatial and temporal distribution of lightning strokes of
high CMC, and in -
characterizing EM perturbations of different time scales occurring in the
atmosphere-ionosphere system (e.g., due to lightning or due to solar
activity). In
addition to applying known procedures to achieve these goals we also seeking
novel methods based on utilization of ELF transients, for studying our EM
environment. |
Mi a kutatás
alapkérdése? - Main questions of the project
A tervezett kutatás főbb kérdései: - Mennyire érzékenyek az ELF tranziensekből meghatározható forrás paraméterek a földkéreg vezetőképességi anizotrópia formájában is megnyilvánuló szerkezeti inhomogenitásaira, illetve az alsó ionoszféra aktuális EM állapota hogyan nyilvánul meg az ELF tranziensek terjedési sebességének statisztikai mutatóiban? Mindkét kérdés megválaszolásához felhasználható, hogy a Föld-ionoszféra hullámvezető határfelületeinek vezetőképességi viszonyai közvetlenül befolyásolják az EM hullámok lokális polarizációját és terjedési tulajdonságait, miközben az ELF hullámok a terjedésük során néhány km mélyen behatolnak a földkéregbe, illetve átjárják az ionoszféra diffúz alsó határrétegét. - Hogyan viszonyulnak a nagy töltésmomentumú villámok alapján meghatározott klimatológiai trendek a többségében átlagos villámkisülések eloszlásából származókhoz? |
Main
questions of planned research: - How
sensitive are source parameters determined from ELF transients to structural
inhomogeneities manifest in anisotropic conductivities in the Earth’s crust,
and how the actual EM state of the lower ionosphere is mirrored in statistics
of propagation speeds of ELF transients? In answering these questions it can be utilized that conductivities in the
boundary layers of the Earth-ionosphere waveguide directly determine local
polarization and propagation characteristics of EM waves as ELF waves
penetrate into the lower ionosphere and also a few kilometers depth into the
Earth’s crust. - How are
climatological trends deduced from the distribution of lightning strokes of
high charge moment change (CMC) are related to climatological trends mirrored
by general lightning activity? Intense lightning strokes with high CMC may
occur only under characteristic conditions so such discharges refer to a
specific state of a thunderstorm. The question can be answered in the
framework of the proposed research program because lightning strokes of large
CMC can be identified by their ELF band radiation. - Which
(morphological) characteristics of transient luminous events are connected with the polarity and CMC of the source
lightning discharge? The set of morphological properties of red sprites as
well as the circle of physical properties of source processes in gigantic
jets and in terrestrial UV bursts mirrored by the properties of ELF
transients are yet to be identified. |
Mi a kutatás
jelentősége? - Relevance of the
research
Akár egyetlen ELF mérőállomás is egyszerre
regionális éghajlatot is alapvetően meghatározzák. A klímaváltozás
indikátoraként is tekinthető zivatartevékenység monitorozásának gazdaságos
nagy töltésmomentumú villámkisülések jellemző előfordulási területeinek és
időszakának meghatározása regionális léptékben is hasznos, hiszen az intenzív
felhő-föld villámok felelősek a zivatarok elektromos aktivitásából eredő
károk (elektromos berendezések meghibásodása, tűzesetek) túlnyomó
többségéért. Bolygónk
energiamérlegének tanulmányozása, illetve az űridőjárás lehetséges földi
hatásainak felmérése és kvantitatív jellemzése szempontjából bír fokozott jelentőséggel
az atmoszféra különböző rétegei közötti elektrodinamikai csatolási
mechanizmusok feltárása. A tervezett kutatások egy része ehhez járul hozzá összefüggések
keresésével a villámkisülések által kiváltott emissziók optikai tulajdonságai
és ezen emissziók ELF tranziensek segítségével jellemezhető EM környezete
között. |
Some regions of the atmosphere and of the Earth’s
crust which are difficult to study by direct observations can be investigated
relatively easily and economically by using ELF transients. ELF measurements
even from a single location can provide information both on the local
structure of the upper section of the Earth’s crust and on the global
electromagnetic (EM) state of the lower ionosphere. By using observations
from more ELF stations, consistency of the obtained results can be verified,
the contribution of local and global factors can be separated, and the
uncertainty of the results can be reduced. The electrical activity of thunderstorms is
very sensitive to parameters of the atmosphere (e.g., temperature and
humidity) which fundamentally determine the global as well as regional
climate. An economic alternative to monitoring thunderstorm activity (i.e.,
an indicator of the global climate change) by satellites or by multi-station
ground-based lightning detection networks can be a detection network
consisting of only a few ELF stations where ELF transients are recorded. Prior
to using such a network, however, the relation of results from studies based
on ELF transients and on other datasets must be clarified. Finding hot spots of occurrences of
lightning strokes of high charge moment change is useful also in regional
scale because intense cloud-to-ground lightning flashes are responsible for the majority of damage associated with electric activity
in thunderstorms (e.g., electric damage, forest fires). Studying the mechanisms of EM coupling
between different layers of the atmosphere is important from the point of
view of examining the energy balance of the Earth and characterizing the
effects of space weather on human activities. The proposed research contributes
to the investigation of these topics by exploring the relations between optical
properties of lightning-induced transient luminous events (TLEs) occurring in
the mesosphere and the EM environment of these TLEs which can be inferred
from the properties of the associated ELF transients. |
A kutatás fő
célkitűzései laikusok számára. - Main aims of the research for
readers of common knowledge
Az extrém alacsonyfrekvenciás (ELF, 3-3000 Hz) tranziensek a légköri elektromágneses tér általában néhány tizedmásodperc alatt lecsengő zavarai, amelyeket legtöbbször egy-egy intenzív villámkisülés okoz. A pályázott kutatás célja ELF tranziensekre alapozott környezetmonitorozó eljárások kidolgozása a földi elektromágneses környezet különböző elemeinek a vizsgálata érdekében. A különböző zivatargócokból érkező ELF tranziensek elemzésével az ELF hullámok terjedését befolyásoló környezeti tényezők tanulmányozhatók, mint pl. a felső földkéreg elektromos vezetőképességének irányfüggése, vagy a Földet körülvevő ionoszféra alsó határrétegének elektromos állapota. Egyúttal e tartományok szerkezetének vizsgálatára is új módszereket találhatunk. |
Extremely
low frequency (ELF, 3-3000 Hz) transients are short duration (of few tenths
of seconds) disturbances of the atmospheric electromagnetic (EM) field caused
dominantly by intense lightning flashes. The
purpose of the proposed research is to establish methods based on the
detection of ELF transients for monitoring different constituents of our EM
environment. EM
factors of our environment such as directional dependence of the electrical
conductivity in the Earth’s crust or the EM state of the lower boundary layer
of the ionosphere can be studied by ELF transients arriving from
thunderstorms all around the Earth. At the same time, new methods based on
the analysis of ELF transients can be developed, too, for exploring the
structure of these regions. Understanding
energy transport processes between different layers of the atmosphere and
monitoring the EM state of the ionosphere is important from the point of view
of keeping track of the energy balance of our planet and predicting the
effects of space weather on human activity. Information on energy transport
processes in the atmosphere can be gained also from comparing the properties
of lightning flashes found from the analysis of ELF transients to properties
of atmospheric optical phenomena caused by these lightning flashes. By
analyzing ELF transients, it also possible to find those seasons and regions
in which the most powerful lightning flashes tend to occur. In regional
scale, this information can help identify or anticipate damages from
lightning strokes. The variation of the distribution of intense lightning
strokes worldwide, on the other hand, mirrors trends of the changing global
climate. |
