Integrated Sentinel-1 geodynamic networks (2015- )

In the framework of an ESA PECS project, we have designed artificial reflectors for the Sentinel-1 mission, which allow the determination of surface displacements with an accuracy of few mm. So-called integrated benchmarks were developed by combining Sentinel-1 reflectors for ascending and descending satellite passes with marks for traditional geodetic (GNSS, leveling, gravimetry) measurements and networks were established in Hungary affected by active geodynamic processes. By combining satellite and traditional techniques the 3D deformation fields can be estimated. The Sentinel-1 networks are located in the area of Kulcs, Dunaszekcső and Fonyód, where active landslide processes are ongoing. The illustration shows an integrated geodynamic benchmark of the Dunacsekcső network.

The Hungarian AlpArray seismic network (2015-2018)

The AlpArray project, which was initiated by the ETH Zurich with cooperation with core institutes of geophysics in Europe, aims to study the structure and geodynamics of the Alpine – Apennines – Carpathian – Dinaric system and its wider environment and assessing earthquake hazard. The deep structure of the Alps is imaged by a dense network of broadband seismic stations running for at least three years which definitly would increasethe available  information on the structure and physical parameters of the lithosphere and the upper mantle. The installation of the Hungarian AlpArray temporary network was carried out by the Kövesligethy Radó Seismological Observatory. The AlpArray project started on January 1 2016 and it is in the data collection phase. During the project, 24 European institutes provide the maintenance of the AlpArray Backbone Seismic Network, which is the backbone of the research, and the CSFK Geodetic and Geophysical Institute participates in the project with altogether 23 broadband seismic stations.
